I tend to rambling quite a bit when I’m stuck on writing. Today is one of those days because I am tasked to write marketing/educational-type stuff, which is not really my ballpark.

But since rambling helps me think, so imma ramble here a bit.

So, at the start up, we released a new feature recently. We call it “section level rules.”

Alright, alright, let me back the fuck up. To give some context, we help businesses send “smart” emails to their users/subscribers/customers. These “smart” emails has content that is tailored to every user. We can do this because our customers send their data to us, and with our editor, they can use their data-points as content in emails they send.

For instance, you can use readers’ names, join date, or any other data point in your messages, and produce a personalized message like, “Welcome, Michael. Thanks for being a member since 2011!” that differs for every user.

So, with “section level rules” you can go a step further and set up a message that ONLY appears, for instance, for people who’ve been members since 2011. This has a tremendous advantage over generic messages; it looks you wrote a message specifically for that user. Because of that it will produce more interest, and ultimately, more clicks.

Google built an entire empire on targeted search ads. This is the same concept in email.

You could say that we’re doing targeted advertisement for email.

But strictly speaking, we’re only STARTING in the email advertisment business, because messages can be more than advertisements, and I believe we will eventually go beyond email… I‘d rather say we’re in the “targeted multi-purpose online engagement” business, because that’s a bit more broad.

Unfortunately, that unwieldy name looks like it came out of an old-school press release.

Luckily, as it happens, I’ve been reading on the life of Richard Feynman. The famous physicist was known for his simple, salient, and memorable lessons. He liked to say, “If we can’t explain this to freshman students, then we don’t understand it well enough.” He would heavily use imagery and analogies in his lessons — in fact, his freshman lectures on physics has been translated in dozens of languages and credited to have sparked the enthusiasm of an entire generation of physicists. Being simple and memorable is important.

So, applying his principles today, I’ve come up with an easy-to-remember acronym for our business:

TAMPON-Engagement.

No, seriously. That’s TAgeted Multi-Purpose ONline Engagement.

Try to forget THAT.

Now, who wants to take a ride in the TAMPON-Engagement rocket ship?
