Project Athens has been a public project on Github since the first line of code. It was first in my personal repository (and called vgoprox) and now it’s in its permanent home, https://github.com/gomods/athens.

We’re growing fast, come join us!

We got a prototype working on day one, and on day two, we started explaining why Athens is good for the community, and most importantly, getting Gophers involved.

In retrospect, everything we did on day two is paying off because today, we have a growing, vibrant and diverse community.

For starters, the different viewpoints we all bring give us lots of use cases for Athens, and that brings us a more usable project, a more resilient codebase, better technology, and a lot more fun every day working on the project 😃!

Oh, and we also have folks using all different kinds of operating systems, which keeps us all on our toes to make sure the development experience works for everyone 😆!

Our Community, Distributed

Also, and most importantly to me, we’re scattered all around the world — we’re from Africa, Europe, North America and Asia and we’re still a relatively small group.

Asynchronous communication + complete transparency = happy community

That we’re in all those different time zones means we’re working on the project almost 24 hours a day, and that forces us to communicate with each other in the open, all the time.

Having that kind of transparency means that nobody is in the dark, nobody feels like they’re left out, and generally we keep our philosophy alive and well.

In math terms, async_communication + complete_transparency = happy_community!

Let’s Keep Going!

Whatever continent you’re on, wherever and whenever you work, don’t hesitate to join us if you’re interested in what we’re doing.

Here is an introduction to the project, with instructions on how to get involved. We’d love to have you join us wherever you are and whatever experience you have with Go.

That’s all for today. Keep on rockin’!
