At Data Campfire, we design Data Visualization workshops in a team of designers and data scientists. My role as a designer is to make sure our workshops speak to people who have close to zero backgrounds in data or programming, with our organization’s aim to make ‘working with data’ accessible to everyone.

Our last Data Visualization workshop in London, October 2017

We do this by integrating Design Thinking components into the Data Science & Visualization process. During the workshops, we don’t start with datasets, but we start with asking the right questions. Before we teach how to use different tools and software, we ask you to sketch different visualization ideas to convey messages out of your datasets. We give you room to explore with their topic and datasets and find out your own answers by working and bouncing ideas with other learners. We ask you to tell a story with your final visuals and receive feedback from others if it conveys the message effectively.

Students (we call them Learners) creating their own data visualizations at our workshop

These components allow people to understand how to lead their applied data science projects, and make sure everyone regardless of their backgrounds can be on the same page. It makes sure the clear goal of using data, and enables the team to extract the most relevant information for better decision making. At the end of the workshop, people will walk away with not just technical data handling skills to use cutting-edge software and tools for data cleaning and visualization, but also with the thorough process to build a data culture within your organization.

Data Campfire is organizing our 5th workshop in Santiago, Chile on the 2nd of December, first time after running them in London. You can find more details through this link. bit.ly/welcu_dataviz
