Projector is joining Medium

The Projector platform will live on temporarily, but the service will be discontinued on August 31, 2022.

In 2017, a small team inside a small office on Howard Street in San Francisco conceived the original idea for Projector. A widely accessible, collaborative, visual communication platform that would help people turn their ideas into flexible, multimedia stories that could be published anywhere. We were lucky to find top-tier investors who believed in our vision, and we got to work. We built countless product iterations and tested them with friends and colleagues and their extended networks. We took feedback to heart, we debated, and we refined our original product concepts. In 2019, we announced the company and invited early customers to our first release of the platform. And in the summer of 2020, in the early days of the pandemic, we pulled back the curtain and launched Projector publicly.

Since then, hundreds of thousands of stories have been created on the platform. We’ve built close relationships with creators and watched as their newsletters, social media campaigns, presentations, and zines were shaped by Projector. And we’ve received heartfelt feedback — along with many fun bug reports! — from teams and makers around the world. To say the very least, it’s been a moving experience for our team over these four short years.

Today marks another momentous occasion for Projector. I’m proud, excited, and humbled to share with you that our company has been acquired by Medium, and we’ll be joining forces with their team this week.

We have so many reasons to be excited for this new opportunity, but I also have to address the most difficult consequence of this merger. Along with the team at Medium, we’ve made the decision to sunset the Projector platform. Projector will continue to function as usual until March 8, 2022, at which point the service will be discontinued. We will continue to offer customer support until that time, and our team will be ready to assist in helping Projector creators export their data and stories.

Matching with Medium

Medium is a bona fide web publishing pioneer. Their creative tools set a standard that has inspired designers and development teams across our industry. As a team obsessed with authoring and editing tools, we’ve long admired their work and craftsmanship. But the decision to team up with Medium runs deeper than that. We’re inspired by their commitment to nuanced thinking, detailed ideas and storytelling. The core ethos of their platform — a place where ideas take shape, take off, and spark powerful conversations — just feels a whole lot like us.

We’re thrilled to be able to use our expertise, our technology, our products, and our passion to fuel new creative capabilities and experiences in the Medium ecosystem. It’s a tremendous, worthwhile opportunity, and one our team is proud to have a hand in.

The Future of Projector

As I mentioned earlier, we’ve made the difficult decision to sunset the Projector platform on August 31, 2022. Between now and then, all product functionality will continue to work as usual. While the service is running, we will continue to offer customer support, respond to bug reports, and address critical updates. Our response times, however, may be a bit slower than usual. All new feature development on Projector has been paused, effective immediately. If you have any questions, please check out our Help Center or contact us at support@projector.com.

Thank you

On behalf of everyone at Projector, thank you for your support over the years. Building this platform for all of you has been the experience of a lifetime.
