Towards decarbonizing Construction

  • Greener Buildings. Greener Structures. Greener Cities
  • Smaller waste of materials and a more efficient supply chain
  • Greener construction machinery operations with higher utilization
  • Lesser design changes, lesser change requests, claims and variations
  • Better feasibility designs. Better planning and micro-climate control
  • Control Time, Cost and Resources. Achieve deliverables timelines
  • Bidders' evaluation will mostly be based on decarbonization measures

What is the status quo?

  • Designing a Net-Zero building and seeking a Net-Zero construction process are two different things and are not aligned.
  • Seeking construction efficiency, increased labor productivity, machinery utilization and just-in-time procurement do not necessarily imply greener construction operations
  • Sustainable construction is almost impossible. Site operations are complex, hard to control and almost impossible to balance cost and design requirements.
  • Materials embodied carbon is almost impossible to fairly calculate as manufacturing processes, logistics, and end-of-life differ and are part of a complicated and heterogeneous supply chain

Let’s not give up … so quickly

  1. Construction Management has an obvious positive effect on project economics and a parallel effect on greener, better-optimized, operations. Saving money and Saving the planet!
  2. Construction complexity can be tamed with the use of software that treats processes -office and site- holistically.
  3. Materials and Items (materials and services) international cataloging and taxonomies can assist in fairer buyer-supplier evaluations and set the requirements for better control of the manufacturing process
  4. Well-trained labor, including machinery operators, site engineers and workers can contribute towards greener operations and lower construction costs
  5. Masterplanning, realistic scheduling, resource availability and daily capture of materials exploitation, productivity, and machinery utilization will lead to leaner and greener construction
