A recent study, conducted across England with 24,000 participants, has confirmed the remarkable real-world effectiveness of a drug preventing HIV transmission. The drug, known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), demonstrated an 86% reduction in the risk of HIV contraction in everyday use, aligning with clinical trial indications of 99% efficacy.

The extensive research, led by the UK Health Security Agency in collaboration with the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, represents the largest real-world study of its kind. While welcomed by the Terrence Higgins Trust HIV charity, which emphasized the need for increased awareness, the study paves the way for wider access and distribution of PrEP, signaling a significant step towards achieving the government’s goal of zero HIV transmissions by 2030.
