New Promposity Challenge: Anniversary

February is the shortest month. Lets fill it to bursting with meditations on anniversaries!

Life is shorter than we realize. People change, the year slides away into the next, kids grow. We must hold on to memories while also making new ones.

We often remember anniversary events — birthdays, marriages, when we met someone, when we started working at our job… the list is long. February has always had a special place in my heart: A daughter’s birthday, my marriage, and several other reasons all seem to stack up right around the Saint Valentine’s holiday!

Valentine’s Day itself is a powerful anniversary. Romance and affection, gifts both planned and spontaneous — it’s like an externally-oriented Christmas, aimed at the future instead of the past.

Such a short month packed with such meaning. It always seems to fly by, with every day seeming to carry the promise of Spring’s vibrance more and more… just around the corner.

Whether you have a special attachment to February or not, we would like you to submit a story to Promposity about a tradition, celebration, or remembrance — any anniversary event you choose. Happy or sad, past or present, even a future plan or dream! I will note that it doesn’t need to be true or even nonfiction, we’ll also accept fiction, flash fiction and poetry — just give us some character however you choose.

Here are the requirements:

  • Include a color image which can be used for commercial purposes in the header with the credit listed below it
  • At the end of your article, link back to this challenge article and extend an invitation to participate in this challenge to at least two (2) other writers on Medium
  • Between 500–1000 words in length, except for poetry which can be any length

To get you started, I’ve written my own response to this challenge:

For this challenge, we won’t be selecting winners. You’ll be a winner simply by participating. As always we will publish stories as they come in and promote them on several different social media channels (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Mix, Hacker News, Reddit, Saidit, Pinterest, etc.) and include them in our newsletter which will be sent to all of our followers as well as to the Medium community at large.

All published submissions will be considered for inclusion in a future anthology. (If you don’t want your submission to be considered please put this in a private note on the submission and send us an email to that effect. Choosing to not be considered for the anthology will not affect whether your submission is accepted to be published in Promposity.)

If you aren’t yet a writer for Promposity and would like to be added, let us know in a comments below and we’ll be sure to add you! If you’ve written a response to this prompt and aren’t yet a writer for us, please send an email to Promposity@gmail.com requesting to be added. Put New Writer Request in the subject line and provide a link to an unpublished draft that you have written in response to one of our prompts.

We can’t wait to see what you come up with! For more information on how to submit to Promposity and our guidelines:

Make some memories with your friends and loved ones. Whether your year still feels new or if the shine has already come off, use this contest as a way to encourage yourself to move forward, to hold on to the past while still reaching for the future.

Best wishes, one and all from us here at Promposity. Have an amazing February.
