The topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been generating a lot of buzz on the internet lately. Is the robot army coming to steal our jobs and make human writers and artists obsolete? Probably not! But AI tools like ChatGPT have a multitude of applications that can help writers and artists, so why not take advantage? (Respectfully, of course.)

If you’re interested in learning about AI, check out this article Introducing ChatGPT for how the chatbot works and its practical applications, or this article outlining 20 Entertaining Uses of ChatGPT. Mark Schaefer’s article includes the idea to “write a novel” using ChatGPT, which can generate a plot and characters. This got me thinking:

Can AI generate unique writing prompts for Promptly Written?

The answer is yes! So to get us started appeasing our new robot overlords, I have asked ChatGPT to generate 10 writing prompts about AI for this new Promptly Written promptilicious segment, “AI Made Me Do It”!

How This Works

• Use the following prompts to write anything you’d like: a short story, flash fiction, poem, article, creative nonfiction, etc. Use the prompt in its entirety or change whatever you’d like; it’s up to you!
• Submit your response here at Promptly Written (please follow the submission guidelines) where it will be edited by yours truly, Casey Lawrence**, to other any publication, or self-publish it.
• If you publish your story somewhere on Medium other than PW, make sure to include a link to the prompt at the bottom of your story and tag me (Casey) so that I don’t miss out!

“AI Made Me Do It”: 10 Writing Prompts About AI

1. “A scientist creates an AI that becomes self-aware and starts to question the purpose of its existence. The story should explore the AI’s moral and ethical dilemmas as it gains consciousness and autonomy.”
2. “A group of friends discover a mysterious AI device that can predict the future with perfect accuracy. They soon find themselves in a race against time to prevent a catastrophic event, but at what cost?”
3. “In a society in which AI has replaced most human jobs, a young man struggles to find purpose and meaning in a world where machines have surpassed human capabilities.”

Each of the above prompts was written entirely by the AI known as ChatGPT. If I were writing these prompts, I would have changed some details, but AI knows best, of course!
