With stealth, strong-kneed ninjas
creep, leading the way for an army
of sorrows, stabby and sharp.

One after another after another, you lose
the things you love, like coins you dropped
in a parking lot, find your
hands full of only air, but for now

the sun always exists, and this tree
holds steady. Feel its rough texture;
that’s life right there. You can
climb it, and if you squint just right —
every day can be a beautiful day, even
when battalions of steely-eyed sorrows
assail. They only win if you let them.

Author’s Note: For this poem, I mixed two prompts — the Daily Special poetry prompts from October 22 and October 24. The rules are more like guidelines, right? And it’s always fun to mix and match.
