DCI John Bale was going through his messages when he got the phone call. Symonds sounded excited. “The forensic team has called,” he said. “On checking the inside lip of the van door, they’ve found a thumb print, and it’s a match to a young offender, Matthew Jones.” Symonds could barely contain himself. He went on: “And he has a previous conviction for car theft. Recently released, they’re checking his last known address. Uniform expect to have him at the station either tonight or tomorrow. Do you want to sit in on the interview?”

Bale was delighted, but he paused. Now that Williams was back, he needed to re-establish his team. “Much as I’d like to be there,” he said, “I had best follow the rulebook on delegation. I’ll send DS Williams with DC Collins. Williams has just returned from a COVID absence. I need to get him up to speed.”

“Fair enough, tell them to be here by eleven,” Symonds replied. “Any problems, I’ll ring.”

Bale immediately phoned Williams, who he knew was a shrewd operator. “Crafty Sid” was one of his many nicknames. He liked undercover work. He’d once spent a year infiltrating a drugs ring, living for months with minimal contact with his family. It had been dangerous, but Sid had made it work.
