Did You Grow Together?

Poetry that sprang up out of the soil

Did you grow together?
Two plants reaching up,
endless blue of an everyday sky

Did anyone notice?
That you were entwined, combined, by a mutual need
that pulled you free of the soil

to reach the heights you never could,
if ever you could…

Did it make a difference, in the end?
When you were cut down, harsh and drawn;
could either of you breathe?

Did you reach out a hand, a leaf, too brief
to that endless, mocking, beautiful, sky
— a sky too far for you to reach,
but which you had to try, had to stretch to, had to

Did you go together?
Or were you left alone?
