From upstream,
Out of the mists of ages it appears,
Symbol of change,
Representation of metamorphosis,
Dragonfly!

Ancient insect of mythical lore
Skims down the middle of the stream,
Glides down the creek bed,
Darts from tip of grass,
To daisy,
To willow branch,
Lands on a warm sunny rock.

Stained glass wings extended,
They glow with dazzling colors in the sun.
The eddies of cool water current
Flow, part on both sides.
As if the water parts for
The dragonfly.

On the ancient rock
Created by the pressure of ages,
The primeval carnivorous insect
Suns, warms itself.
A perfected smaller copy
Of an enormous,
Pre-dinosaur ancestor,
Of 300 million years ago.
The “griffinflies,”
With a 30 inch wing-span,
Were truly dragons flying.
