Bale was having a quiet drink with DS Williams. Collins had said he had a date, and judging by the alacrity with which he headed out the door, there was more on offer than a couple of pints with middle-aged colleagues.

“I think we did a good job,” Williams said. “Cheers.” They raised their glasses.

“Well,” he continued, “You and I know it’s not like in the movies where every strand of the story is tied up in the final reel. But a year later, we’ve got a clearer picture.”

They had fished the body out of the Thames early Thursday morning. It had been in the river for some time and was not a pretty sight. Eventually, DNA managed to identify the corpse as that of Simon Grealish. Born in 1990, he had dropped out of school in 2005, and joined a gang in south London. He developed a passion for bodybuilding and became addicted to steroids. He was chosen as the personal bodyguard of the gang leader, Greg Peace, and thus became a familiar, if usually silent, presence in underworld meetings. Occasionally, Peace would tell Simon to deal with a problem. The police could never prove it, but they believed that Simon was linked to eight murders. His weapon of choice was a hammer, and the rumour was that this was because Simon liked to keep things simple.
