Someone I loved once gave me a box full of darkness. It took me years to understand that this too, was a gift.
Mary Oliver

The first man she ever loved brought her a box,
looking inside seeing only darkness and pain.

Confused, is it a gift?

Staring into the box, she tries to look beyond the pain
face the darkness it is inside, trapping her.

Darkness creeps in, pain and hurt consume her,
making a home within her heart, she shuts down.

She cries in the nightmares she can’t escape,
the box a chain around her heart, growing darker.

A lesson to be learned, gifts to be discovered
What has staring into the abyss taught her?

Her fight begins, she has to open the box,
letting the darkness out, her light so dim.

She has the power within to banish the darkness,
screaming as the light bursts out of her, the dark getting smaller.

Staring in the mirror a caring woman stared back,
despite feeling more hurt than anyone should endure.
