The attic door loomed above Jenny as she stood there staring. She had wanted to clean out the space for years, but there were so many memories shoved into boxes, hoping to be forgotten. She wasn’t sure if she was ready to drag them back out again.

The house was being sold. All the other rooms in the house were already cleaned. All the items packed up and shipped out. The only remaining place to clean was the attic. Maybe she could just leave it alone, pretend she forgot about it, and let the new owners deal with it.

Sadness squeezed her heart, making her feel guilty for the thought. Nothing up there meant anything to anyone else. They would just toss the stuff in the garbage and never think twice about it, never know the stories the items held.

Taking a deep breath, Jenny pulled on the rope that produced the stairs that allowed her to climb up into the dark, dank space. The musty smell of time assaulted her nose as she climbed up, shining her flashlight around to scare off any unwanted guests. Nothing scurried away, and she climbed the rest of the way up.

It took her several minutes to navigate her way to the pull rope attached to the light hanging from the ceiling. The light illuminated the small space, chasing the shadows back…
