What Is Freedom?

Essay.

India won its freedom from the British rulers on August 15, 1947.

Since it is the month of August and I am an Indian citizen, after listening to the word ‘freedom’ I connect the word with the Independence Day of my motherland. Though ‘freedom’ has multiple ways to express itself. Some of them are well known while others may be difficult to recognize.

Let me explain the difference. Freedom from the foreign ruler is a kind of socio-political freedom. After gaining independence, we need financial freedom which may take a long time to achieve. But we achieve freedom of speech and freedom of thoughts rather easily. There exist some cages which are very much subtle in nature but important to get rid of. They are like racism, casteism, parochialism etc. If we look into ourselves, we may find there exist superstition, egoism, personal bad habits, addictions etc. Though none of us is perfect, we usually deny having these bad elements’ existence in us. Thus, we allow them to grow more and spread their branches in our mind, knowingly or unknowingly!

Escape :

Most popular example for freedom is a bird freed from its cage and then it flying freely in the sky. Freedom is definitely connected with ‘escape’. Now the question is escape from what? Well, it can be anything. It may be some prison built for people involved in criminal activities. It may be from our society, or prison of bad habits we develop over the time.

Past & Future :

If we can properly recollect it would be realistic to acknowledge that we were not enjoying freedom in our past life. It may also be realized that though later we could have won freedom in those unwanted situations but now tied with different types of ropes. Finally there is no escape.

If I Had More Freedom :

A feelings of being deprived from freedom may exist in our mind which says that if we had freedom we could have done things much better in our life.

But it may be an utopian idea only. We should learn to fight against every odds of life.

Conclusion :

It is believed that men are born free but their life is chained. These chains may be or may not be visible. They have tied us both externally and internally. When one wins freedom from outside chain he or she realizes that there exists a chain inside. All of us living in cages and ironically those cages are invisible.
