Here You Are, There You Go

A poem about betrayal and overcoming jealousy

Me in the subway — image owned by author.

I met you through deceit
should have been my first clue
I chose to move forward
and got addicted to you

Then to the next victim
left behind, holding on
you stayed close to me but
in reality you were gone

No denying your betrayal
obvious, I was a witness
the monster had awoken
it was hungry and vicious

It was eating me alive
I faced myself and dug deep
I fought for days, then weeks
I couldn’t eat, think or sleep

The cure was inner strength
muting it with logic
the battle was won in silence
my immunity now chronic

This poem was inspired by The Promptly Written Monthly Theme for June: jealousy. It is about a girl who cheated on me and how I dealt with it — not the most exciting plot, but it shaped me into who I am today.
