Life’s Lessons

Daily Special 3: Life Tanka

Photo by Jason Leung on Unsplash

On my evening walk
A hedgehog on the path
Taken from this world
Through most unnatural means:
The wheels of a bicycle

On my evening walk
The smallest baby bunny
Stalked by orange cat
Dead just for the sport of it
Keep your pets inside at night

He gently lifts them
As I weep for their losses
Some human did this
Warm bodies in his cold hands
The softest delicate fur

Some human did this:
Our responsibility
Lies dormant beneath
A thin façade of progress.
It’s us who have invaded

Thank you Ravyne Hawke for today’s poetry prompt: “Take the phrase ‘Life’s_____’ (fill in the blank) and use it as the title of a poem, then write the poem [in the form of a Tanka or Tanka series].”

(A Tanka is a Japanese poetry form consisting of five lines: 5/7/5/7/7. They are typically in the first person, have little or no punctuation, and consist of sensory imagery and nature themes.)
