I admit I was never anything special.

I was never the biggest, or the strongest, or even the most beautiful.

What I know to be true is that the many hiker friends I’ve made over the years have always said that I’m one of a kind. They’ve expressed gratitude for the shade I’ve given them on their meandering treks through Malibu Creek State Park.

One of a kind, indeed.

I am a lone tree sitting upon a peak overlooking…well, everything I can see.

Isn’t that funny? In all of this park, on my hill, here I am with no other trees around me. Just my animal, bird, insect, and human friends to keep me company as I guard our precious park, the historic site marking old Hollywood set relics like MASH and Planet of the Apes.

One of a kind, indeed.

I haven’t received any visitors in quite some time. But why should I? I have no shade to provide anymore. I don’t even have any beauty to provide for the photographs they used to love to take. I have no sturdy branches upon which to land or build a nest, no clean bark upon which to feast.
