Precious Memories
Poetry Writing Contest
Where did you go?
You stole off into the night
And the Earth has not had you here
Since December 29th
One last Christmas
But the new year began
We stepped forward without you
2018 would not let you in
Where are you now?
I’m sure you’re with the King
I catch glimpses of you out my window
When the Cardinal comes to feed
I don’t often visit your resting place
Because you’re not really there
You live on within the hearts
Of those your wisdom shared
I remember when I was little
The trip we took back home
In that little Volkswagen
From Texas to Ohio
I was four, too young for school
And work called to my mother
So you took me with you
A road trip for dad and daughter
You reminded me of this for years
So I would not forget
A special memory for the two of us
You knew how much that meant
You littered happy memories
In places throughout my life
Like dropping cappuccino off at work
To make my day a little brighter
And when I stayed home with the kids
You’d visit me in the country
You knew how isolating it could get
And how long the days could be
I miss you terribly but I am happy
For the almost 45 years we had
But most of all, I’m so blessed
God chose you to be my dad
