Writing prompts to tempt your muses

Welcome to Week 15 of Prompt Yourself 2025 at Promptly Written.

The phrase “touch grass” has entered our vernacular as a shorthand to express when someone is out of touch with reality (often, by spending too much time online). Telling someone to “touch grass” is like saying, “you need to interact with the world and (re)gain perspective,” but it’s also a replacement for my generation’s haughty dismissal, “get a life.”

But if the pandemic taught us anything, its that people really do need to touch grass: go outside and get some fresh air, take a walk, stretch our legs.

So far, my most successful writing prompt (in terms of how many people used it and posted the results) was one posted in The Challenged, rather than here at Promptly Written, but it encouraged people to go outside, which is somewhat unusual for a writing prompt:

March 15… Here’s one for the photographers out there and the wannabes. Go outside and take a photo. Yes, it’s a ploy to get you outside. Use this as inspiration for a story, fiction or non-fiction, or a poem.
