DCI Bale had scheduled his morning meeting with Collins for 10. He wanted to allow time for reports to come back from the officers tasked with checking whether any of the properties overlooking the square had been rented. Collins had informed him about Sally Adams’s phone call. Thus, Bale was already aware of Sommers’s will, but he still couldn’t see Adams as capable of hiring a hit-man. The news that she had recognised Likhodeyev’s name was encouraging, although it reinforced Bale’s fear that the people behind this murder might be hard to apprehend. He had sent a request to Commander Cooper at the NCIC to see if there were any significant investigations in which the Russian featured. He’d sent the same request to California. After all, he thought, the fast-acting poison that killed Sommers was one previously used by Russian intelligence.

However, in Bale’s opinion, the most significant development so far had been the possible recovery of a van that might prove to be the one used by Zac Taylor’s killer. One way or another, Taylor was central to the case. Catching his killer, Bale believed, was not only important in itself, but might also be vital in establishing who had Sommers killed. He looked at the sunshine outside. Maybe, he should have Collins drive them over to St. Albans to confer with DCI Symonds. It would be good to get out of town. The new…
