She Groks Me

I discovered the word ‘grok’ from my Reiki Master back in the mid-90s. I didn’t fully understand the word, but then I wasn’t fully awakened then either. When she said she loved interacting with me because I grokked her, I just sat there a bit dumbstruck until I later looked the word up.

Grok — to understand profoundly and intuitively

She was right. I did understand her. No matter how far afield her tree-branch thinking led us, I could follow her every word. From the moment I met her in a writing class, I knew instinctively, intuitively that she and I would be lifelong friends. And she grokked me too. For the first time in my life, someone understood me and I didn’t feel so odd or out-there anymore. I have been grateful every day of the last twenty-seven years to have her as a mentor in my life.

I’ve found a few other people during the last nearly three decades of my life who have grokked me and I’ve grokked them too, but imagine my surprise when I finally found a therapist who groks me!

I’ve been seeing my current therapist since December of 2019. Much like when I first met my Reiki Master, I was completely at ease with her. She is deeply spiritual, but not religious. She understands…
