The Businessman’s Awakening
In response to Weekly Prompts Jan. 15–21, 2022
From rags to riches,
He worked his way to the top.
Today lives in a mansion,
With a picture-perfect family,
Like cherry on top.
To the world,
They had no problems.
With the pool of money flowing,
People wondered, all his issues could be washed away.
But at night when the full moon,
Made an appearance at the man’s window.
He knew in his heart,
He wanted to jump and die in sorrow.
Emotions were weighed with money,
People were viewed as objects.
Empathy didn’t exist in the vocabulary,
Of the people he met.
In his night clothes,
He walked away on a full moon night.
Bid his family goodbye from afar,
While they dreamt superficial dreams till daylight.
Then as he travelled far,
With not a dime in his pocket.
People felt sorry for him,
And loaned him food and a jacket.
On his travels he learnt,
The true meaning of life.
The joy it brings,
To help each other live a simple life.
The joy of giving,
Filled his heart.
He realised that we all turn to ashes,
So, there is no point hoarding it all.
With this learning,
He returned to his mansion.
Taught his family the meaning of life,
And they broke down realising their sins.
Thus began,
The sea of change through hard work and compassion.
Working for the better good,
By helping those in need,
With kindness.
And so they all learnt,
That what you receive is worthless if not returned tenfold.
As, is life fully lived,
If we didn’t touch hearts and spread happiness?
Thank you, Christine Graves for this thought-provoking prompt and Ravyne Hawke for Promptly Written.
It was so much fun to pen down a story of awakening when you have it all.
