POETRY | PROMPTLY WRITTEN
The Chase
Some habits are harder to break
I chased you like life-fuel
for my disembodied spirit
I’d do anything to displace
the pain and agony I felt
But like all bad habits
I needed more and more
never satisfied, satiated
too starved to mere bones
So I picked up the pace
thinking if I outran you
maybe I’d find the truth
somewhere on the other side
But no rainbows led to gold
no amount of endless lovers
could mend my tortured soul
so long as I hated myself
