Dr. Harker could almost have vomited from that all-pervasive odour that had begun to invade the air of the Control room. She began to realize just what the Duke had meant about the unique odour — by its familiarity, yet, it being still of an undefinable provenance. An atavistic memory? Perhaps. Her scientific mind now engaged but momentarily. How could she have such a memory? She had never known of these creatures before the Epsilon Project.

Before she had time to think deeper and find the answer awaiting her, she was grabbed by a gigantic, clawed, green appendage and raised up high above the floor into the thickly congealing odour. She was now faced with her latest creation and the sight and smell were almost too much. Yet the adrenal glands were now kicking in and something else was, but she couldn't quite understand what that was, as her blood began to gush in torrents from her side.

The pain in her shoulder was excruciating as the creature’s claws dug inward and tightened to keep her in mid-air. She was being squeezed. A head suddenly appeared through the miasmic residue of a now gangrenous and bloodied air and its eyes caught the light of the overhead radion glowlights. These were the eyes of the Major. But the rest, as Dr. Harker looked with her own eyes now widened by the pain, was not human. Duke had seen the same thing.
