The Promptly Written Monthly Theme for November
Hint — Is Gen Z the most self-centred generation yet?
In this last month my eldest turned 18 and I moved house, it has been busy to say the least. In amongst all the hectic chaos has been an interesting dialogue with myself and my closest friends about the nature of getting older, and how it changes your perception.
As editor on five very different publications here on the Medium platform I’ve seen a huge influx of younger people requesting to be writers. They tell me how eager they are to share their life experience with the world, and yet they tend to be between 17–22 and I’m left wondering at the wisdom they have to share.
I catch that internal reaction and I remember the quote I scribbled on every desk in my school…
‘No one over the age of 20 really has any idea.’
I’ve probably gotten the wording wrong and no doubt it came from some random Christian Slater movie, and while definitely arrogant, isn’t it just as arrogant for older people to be so certain that they have all the answers? Perhaps the questions are no longer the same.
