The stars in your watery
eyes are sharp, stinging,
smearing the world
with salty disillusionment.

Like barbs on a wire fence,
they rip and tear, leaving
telltale bits of fur and fabric
and frayed pieces of your fantasies.

You wipe your eyes
with the backs of your hands,
grinding the stars in deeper,
pointy edges piercing
your corneas, stellar poison
permeating your bloodstream.

Afterward, you’ll swear
it was someone else
who sprinkled your sight
with the starry host.
