Mike peeked in through the window. The front light was still on, but he couldn’t see Sara anywhere. Maybe she had already gone to bed. It was late. He looked down at his watch, squinting in the darkness to try and see what time it was. With the light on his watch broken, it was impossible to see.

With a sigh, he crept around to the back door and slowly inserted his key. The click as the door unlocked sounded so loud in the quiet night. Mike cringed at the creaking as the door opened. If Sara wasn’t awake before, he was sure she would be now.

Tip toeing through the kitchen, he made his way to the stairs. His foot was on the first step, almost to safety, when the hallway light flicked on. Sarah stood staring down at him from the top of the steps.

“Do you have any idea what time it is?” She crossed her arms over her chest.

“Actually, I don’t.”

“It’s four in the morning. Where have you been?” She walked down the stairs and pushed past him to grab a glass and some milk from the fridge.

Mike scrambled for an answer. Something she would believe. “I was hanging out with the guys and I fell asleep.”
