Last week, we experienced a total lunar eclipse of a full moon. My photos of the event didn’t turn out that well (I’m still learning how to use my new camera!) but it was a really cool experience nonetheless.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the moon moves into the path of the Earth’s shadow. Although not a rare event, a total eclipse coinciding with the full moon is pretty uncommon, happening (if you’ll pardon the pun) once in a blue moon.

The terms “lunatic” and “lunacy” originally referred to epilepsy, insomnia/sleep deprivation, and various kinds of mental illness or insanity — diseases thought to be caused by the moon — and there are a lot of myths and folklore surrounding the moon, too. The most common association with the full moon today is lycanthropy or “werewolves,” but — fun fact! — this is a modern invention; the first movie to feature the transformative effect of the full moon was Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man in 1943!

There’s something mysterious about the moon. It has captured imaginations for endless generations; let’s tap into that tradition with this week’s prompts!
