I love mushrooms! They are very much my aesthetic.

I recently befriended a mycologist and we’ve been spending a lot of time trapesing through the woods in search of photographable fungi and spores to sample (by which I mostly mean microscope slides, not tasty treats — although we’ve collected a few of those, too!).

Late September and early October is very much the season to go mushroom-hunting, and to remember the vital role fungi play in our ecosystems. Death, decay, renewal: it’s all part of an endless natural cycle.

In case you’re in need of a refresher, here are a couple of quick reminders:

How This Works

  1. Use these prompts to write poetry, fiction, or creative non-fiction. Include a link to the prompt at the bottom of your post.
  2. If you use one of these prompts, you can submit the result here at PW, or anywhere else you like. If you submit somewhere besides PW, make sure to tag PW editors so that we do not miss reading your story!
  3. You don’t have to use PW’s prompts to submit
