The propaganda I chose to select was the Obama administration birthplace scandal. Starting during his 2008 campaign and continuing throughout his presidency. Rumors that he wasn’t born in Honolulu Hawaii but was instead born somewhere overseas. If these rumors were true then Obama would have not been eligible to be president. According to the US constitution you must be a natural born citizen of the United states and at least 35 years old. Politicians on the political right fed into these rumors and stated numerous accounts of misinformation such as the fact that there is no proof Obama was born in the United States. However this isn’t true as there are numerous credible sources along with newspaper clippings all saying Obama was born where he says he was. It doesn’t take a far leap to bring up the fact that most other politicians do not receive this kind of demand for proof of birth and the fact that Obama was the United States first ever black president. Many non politicians and voters fed into these rumors by spreading claims with no backing whatsoever that he was born in Africa specifically Kenya. This was a major hindrance in his campaign and was heavily focused on in the media. There were a lot of controversial decisions made by Obama during his campaign and some with negative effects and yet still so many Americans instead chose to focus on rumors regarding his race with no evidence. It’s clear that this was propaganda spread throughout his time. The way people clung to these rumors is a clear statement about what many Americans believe a US citizen should look like and to them Obama was not it. Many were also simply looking for reasons to dislike him be it his democratic ideas or something more hateful. It’s important we talk about situations such as this one and how easily people can fall for misinformation or how it can be used to simply give another side an argument against a situations they might not have previously had one for.
