In 2018 there has been a tremendous amount of change within the blockchain and ICO space. One of the most prevalent changes, however, is the maturation of the landscape, and the introduction of more and more professional traditional investors, and the fact that ICO contributors have become much more experienced and discerning with which ICOs they are willing to select.

As of right now, there are four main types of contributors that ICOs need to target and cater their messaging for. But, as with everything in the blockchain space, this is entirely susceptible to change.

  • Individual contributors (crypto-amateurs and newbies)
  • Institutional VCs, who recently entered the crypto-space
  • Crypto-millionaires (commonly referred to as “whales”)
  • Hedge funds, and crypto-buying groups financed by whales and other traditional LPs

Individual buyers are relatively unchanged in the current ICO market, outside of them becoming much more rigorous in their research and determination of whether it is worth contributing. Even new buyers are much more likely to avoid potential scams, as veteran bitcointalk.org users will point out any red flags in ICO ANN threads. However, individual buyers are still the main targets of crowdsales.

The maturation of the ICO market, and the worldwide blockchain regulations, such as from the United State’s SEC, has allowed institutional VCs to enter the crypto space. Institutional VCs main concern is the long-term viability of a product, and look to the project’s team, the product, the token economy and the project’s presence in the media and crypto-space.

Crypto-millionaires mainly focus on the community response to a project. Their key identifiers of a worthwhile product is whether it can get the support of a continually expanding community, and whether the blockchain technology is unique and relevant to the current market needs.

Hedge funds and crypto-buying groups are focused on a project’s ability to control its token price and what its liquidity will be. Their primary concern with their contributions is to later trade the tokens they purchase when their value has risen.
