Name

Managed by Tennis Australia, the first annual tennis tournament, known as the Australasian Championships, was held in Melbourne in 1905. Nineteen years later, the event got big, and in 1927, it was rebranded into the Australian Championships. In 1969 it became open to any participants, including professionals, and got its current title, turning into the Australian Open.

Since 1905, the tournament has been held 110 times in 5 Australian and 2 New Zealander cities, including Melbourn, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth, Christchurch, and Hastings.

Chronology

The annual event was held every year since 1905 except for 1916–1918 due to World War I and 1941–1945 due to World War II.

Surfaces

From 1905 to 1988, the Australian Open was known for grass courts. However, it used other surfaces, including green-colored Rebound Ace from 1988 to 2007, blue Plexicushion from 2008 to 2019, and blue GreenSet from 2020.

  • The Australian Open is said to boost the Victorian economy. For instance, in 2020, the event contributed $387.7 million to the treasury.
  • The first international players who participated in the Australian Open were the US Davis Cup representatives. They went to the Australian tournament in 1946.
  • Mats Wilander became the only player to win grass and hard courts tournaments.
  • The Australian Open used to fluctuate due to the climate of each site and various events. However, since 1988, it has been held at the Melbourne Park stadium.

2023 Australian Open

Held from 16 to 29 January, the 111th Australian Open will take place at Melbourne Park and include multiple singles and doubles tournaments for professional, junior, and wheelchair players. The Official Program represents the world’s top 50-ranked men and women players.
