Lots of people talk about their passion and why they have to do something. Yesterday I was listening to a podcast interview with Marc Andreessen and he had some contrarian views about following your passion. He sees that as a very self-centered endeavor and said he tries to avoid investing in people with that focus. He proposes that a better idea is looking to contribute.

If you have a passion for developing a product/service/organization, it might matter a great deal to you, but not so much to anyone else. But if your desire is to develop a product/service/organization because it will contribute to the greater good, then it’s much more likely to matter to other people.

For me, I get wary when people tell me they are driven. Because people are often driven by revenge, hate, fear and other negative influences. People who are driven to do something, are usually exhausted and depleted afterward.

There is a qualitative difference with being driven to accomplish something, and actually experiencing an inner calling that makes your heart beat faster. I like to associate with people who are experiencing a calling and want to contribute.

So where are you at in your life and career right now? Are you driven or driving?
