I spent my 16th birthday in jail, while I was awaiting trial for armed robbery. One day there was the sound of jangling keys and I looked up to find the guard letting a visitor into my cell. His name was Baxter, and he was the father of a girl went to high school with. She had beseeched him to try and help me.

He told me I didn’t belong in that jail cell, because I was capable of great things. I thought he was full of shit. Figured he had no idea who he was talking to. But he persisted.

He said, “I spoke with all of your teachers. They tell me you can skip school for three weeks straight, then come in the next day and pass a test. Your reading comprehension skills are above college level.”

Then he said it again…

“You don’t belong here. You’re capable of great things.”

Truth is, after sitting in that jail cell for so long, and reflecting on my choices in life — I desperately wanted to believe him. And you know the funny thing? I wanted to believe him so desperately, that I believed him. But here’s the most important part…

Because I believed it, it was true. Do you really get that?

Here’s the other important thing: If I didn’t believe him, it wouldn’t have been true. Do you really get that?

The stories you tell yourself are instrumental is creating your destiny. Tim Ferris has a set of seven questions he asks all of his podcast guests. One of them is, “If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it, what would it say and why?” Mine would say,

Change Your Story.

As we come up on the New Year, I hope you’ll spend some time, thinking about the stories you tell (sell) yourself. The limiting stories about why you’re too young, old, uneducated, poor, dumb, overweight, shy, short, tall, or disabled. The stories that cause you to wait, procrastinate, pull back, or damper down what you attempt. What you dream. And ultimately, what you do.

You’re capable of great things.

And as long as I can type and have access to the Internet, or a smartphone to do a podcast, I’m going to keep reminding you of that.

It is NEVER too late to change your story. Every day you wake up is an opportunity to start a fresh chapter.

Please. Accept your abundance. Allow yourself to dare, to attempt, to really go for it.

Because you’re capable of great things.
