Earlier this morning, the Citizen safety network opened in Baltimore, Maryland, in order to help residents stay safe.

Citizen’s technology keeps the public informed with real-time notifications of nearby crime and emergencies. This information empowers users with knowledge to make more informed, thoughtful decisions about their safety.

Our mission is to ‘Protect the World’. That mission is rooted in the belief that everybody deserves safety. With the information Citizen provides through our free application, all residents of Baltimore have the power to stay safe, protected, and fully informed every minute of every day.

“My friend and advisor Ben Jealous approached Citizen about coming to Baltimore next. Given the escalating crime and lack of public safety resources, Baltimore was a great place to try something new,” said Andrew Frame, CEO. “Citizen can now help Baltimore residents in the way it has helped New York and San Francisco, with real-time notifications that let a user escape a burning building or rescue a four-year old from an abductor. Citizen, with its real-time information, may be just what Baltimore needs.”

Citizen alerts help provide information about missing persons in real-time.

Citizen is currently in operation in the New York Metro and the San Francisco Bay Area, with more than 600,000 thousand active users and nearly 2 million safety alerts shared each day. Citizen is a vital part of how many residents stay safe and informed about their surroundings. The technology has become such a significant component of the safety infrastructure in New York that the New York City Fire Department is using Citizen order to better deploy resources to ongoing fires and emergencies across the city.

Baltimore residents, emergency service responders, and businesses will find this new tool helpful in making a safer, more protected city for everyone.

Background

Citizen is a free safety utility available for both iOS and Android. Citizen pushes real-time notifications to the public, helping them stay informed and safe.

Citizen recently helped find a missing 103-year old man, and in October someone using our app spotted an abducted 4-year old that led to an arrest of a man wanted for child sex abuse in New York City. On a recent Friday night in New Jersey Citizen provided real-time awareness to members of the public in a mall about an active shooter — hours before anything was communicated on official channels.

A team of 24/7 analysts manages the safety network, making editorial decisions and issuing real-time notifications. There are roughly 2 million notifications made each day across our first 2 markets. Recently, the New York Post chronicled this man’s story about escaping a burning building with the help of Citizen.

Citizen provides a real-time map of what’s happening around you as you navigate your city, so you can make better and more informed decisions.
