In this installment of Prototype Capital’s “Future Of” blog series, we speak to Obi Omile, Co-Founder and CEO of theCut, a Prototype Capital portfolio company in the men’s grooming space.

We asked Obi a series of open-ended questions about unmet needs in his industry and where he believes the industry is headed.

1. You’re in a really unique space where you’re bringing technology into the antiquated men’s grooming industry. What are some of the most pressing industry needs that still haven’t been solved?

The Industry is evolving and the proliferation of technology into our daily lives has made the transition more seamless. However, there are still opportunities for improvement. Generally, the barbershop industry is highly fragmented. There are few mediums that provide industry wide reach at scale. Also, education is not standardized across the board. Many barbers tend not to be licensed as well. An increase in licensed barbers would create an air of professionalism that would command respect from clients. Which would make adoption of scheduling software and adherence to their schedules more consistent.

2. What other aspects of men’s grooming are ripe for technology to disrupt?

Technology is great for connecting people as well as simplifying tasks. We believe there’s a ton of opportunity to take the men’s grooming industry to the next level. There are still nuances with training, e-commerce, and discovery that we think can be improved.

3. In 10 years, what does the men’s grooming industry look like and where does theCut fit into that future?

In a decade we envision the men’s grooming industry looking fundamentally different than it does today. Technology and scheduling tools would no longer be an added benefit but the norm, with theCut has the defact-o leader in the space. Digital payments and tailored e-commerce will both become synonymous with barbershop culture. We envision modern barbershops powered by theCut delivering whole new experiences to barbers and clients.

Many thanks to Obi for spending some time and enlightening us about the future of men’s grooming.

Cheers to the future,

Team Prototype Capital
