Ear Hustle — part of the Radiotopia from PRX podcast network — was named a finalist in the 2024 National Magazine Awards, announced by the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) on February 15.

Ear Hustle hosts Nigel Poor and Earlonne Woods co-created the podcast that launched in 2017 while Earlonne was incarcerated at San Quentin State Prison, where Nigel was a volunteer teaching photography. From finding romance to grappling with a life sentence to trying to parent via 15-minute phone calls, Ear Hustle brings listeners the raw, surprising, and sometimes funny daily realities of prison life.

Ear Hustle is nominated for a special standalone episode released on October 18, 2023, titled “San Quentin: The Magazine.” The episode is guided by a question: if San Quentin were a magazine, what would it sound like? Individuals inside the prison collaborated with the Ear Hustle team outside on nonfiction vignettes traversing topics including popcorn, new tablets to communicate with, gazebos on the prison yard, and a service dog named June Bug:

“The astonishing variety of this year’s National Magazine Award nominees demonstrates the vitality of magazine journalism, whether the outlet is a print magazine, a website, a podcast or even a newspaper,” said Sidney Holt, the executive director of the American Society of Magazine Editors in the official announcement. “These honorees underscore the continuing importance of magazine storytelling to American society.”

Ear Hustle is a two-time Peabody Award finalist, Pulitzer Prize finalist, and duPont-Columbia Award winner. Episodes of the podcast have been downloaded more than 78 million times.

Previous National Magazine Award finalists from Radiotopia also include Articles of Interest from Avery Trufelman and an audio collaboration with McSweeney’s literary magazine.

Winners of the 2024 awards will be announced in April.
