“False Idol” from Religion of Sports and PRX Wins Honors at the New York Festivals Radio Awards

The multi-part narrative podcast series re-examining the tragic story of sprinter Oscar Pistorius and Reeva Steenkamp was awarded gold in the sports podcast category and was also honored in serialized podcast and documentary categories

The New York Festivals Radio Awards announced 2022 Storytellers Gala award-winners — honoring innovative audio work created by world-class storytellers — including the narrative series “False Idol” from award-winning media company Religion of Sports and public media organization PRX.

A seven-part narrative podcast series re-examining the tragic story of Paralympian sprinter Oscar Pistorius and the murder of Reeva Steenkamp, “False Idol” was awarded a gold trophy in the sports podcast category. The series was also awarded silver in serialized podcast and narrative/documentary podcast categories.

In addition, the“Crushed” podcast series from Religion of Sports and PRX, revisiting and untangling the truths and myths of Major League Baseball’s steroid era, was a finalist in the sports category.

The production team for “False Idol” included host, writer, and reporter Tim Rohan, producer Timothy Lou Ly, senior producers Kate McAuliffe and Devon Manze, production assistant Meghan Coyle, editor Michael Garofalo, engineers Sandra Lopez-Monsalve and Ian Coss, and fact checker Matt Giles. Gotham Chopra, Ameeth Sankaran, and Adam Schlossman served as executive producers.

The production team for “Crushed” included host and reporter Joan Niesen, senior producer Jessica Pupovac, editor Michael Garofalo, associate producer Devon Manze, production assistant Meghan Coyle, engineers Tommy Bazarian and Dan Dzula, and fact checker Jane Ackermann. Gotham Chopra, Ameeth Sankaran, and Adam Schlossman served as executive producers.

This year, the New York Festivals Radio Awards awarded audio creators and producers from 24 countries, including NBC News, SiriusXM, HarperCollins Publishers, ABC Radio National, Sky News Radio, Audible, CBC, BBC, RTÉ Radio Ireland, and Pushkin Industries.
