The 2023 Tribeca Festival announced its Audio Storytelling Official Selections. A forthcoming “Radio Diaries” series titled “The Unmarked Graveyard: Stories from Hart Island” — part of Radiotopia from PRX, a network of independent podcasts — is selected and honored among established podcast creators in nonfiction.
“The Unmarked Graveyard: Stories from Hart Island” will premiere during the festival. The podcast series will be released in full from “Radio Diaries” at a future date in 2023. Founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in 2001, The Tribeca Festival celebrates storytelling in all its forms. The 2023 Tribeca Festival will take place from June 7–18 in New York City.
Hart Island, off the coast of New York City, is America’s largest public cemetery. More than a million people are buried there, among them early AIDS patients, homeless people, immigrants, artists, prisoners, and about ten percent of New Yorkers who died of COVID-19. Hart Island’s graves are unmarked, and many who are buried there are shrouded in anonymity. In this multi-part series from “Radio Diaries,” people’s loved ones go to great lengths to uncover their stories. As one example, in 2017, an unidentified homeless man was buried in Plot 383 on the island. His identity later came to light by chance.
Founded in 1996, “Radio Diaries” presents first-person audio diaries, sound portraits, and hidden chapters of history. The show has also helped to pioneer a new form of citizen storytelling and journalism, having worked with a wide swath of individuals to help them tell the extraordinary stories of their own lives. “Radio Diaries” stories have been recognized by The Peabody Awards, RFK Human Rights, the duPont-Columbia Awards, Third Coast, and more.
The “The Unmarked Graveyard: Stories from Hart Island” creator team includes Alissa Escarce, Nellie Gilles, and Peabody Award-winning Founder and Executive Producer Joe Richman of “Radio Diaries.”
In recent years, Radiotopia podcasts including “Radiotopia Presents: My Mother Made Me” and “Radiotopia Presents: Blind Guy Travels” have been honored as Tribeca Official Selections. “Ear Hustle” has also been featured at the festival. In addition, Radiotopia shows including “Articles of Interest,” “Mumbai Crime,” and “Radiotopia Presents: My Mother Made Me” have been featured on the Tribeca Audio Premieres podcast, highlighting today’s greatest audio stories and storytellers.
