Love + Radio just released the first episode of its new season today. For the seventh season, the show will focus on the individual’s relationship with communities: churches, cults, political parties and more. They’re going to examine the ideas behind belonging, collectives, and how to navigate this interesting world. The creator of Love+Radio, Nicholas van der Kolk, described his inspiration behind this season:

“I’ve recently (for reasons that are probably not all that hard to deduce), become obsessed by how people convince themselves of ideas, not based on logic, but on loyalty, and so for this season we’re focusing on where the individual ends and where the collective begins: churches, cults, political parties, you name it. We’re doing a deep dive on the consequences of belonging: what it’s like to be on the inside looking out, and on the outside looking in.”

Take a peek into the first five episodes of Love + Radio’s exciting new season.

Episode 1: “Counter Melody”

At the turn of the 20th century, composer Edward Elgar released the Enigma Variations. Elgar was a huge fan of codes and cyphers, and many people believe this composition contains a hidden message. One man in Plano, Texas, says he’s figured it out.

Episode 2: “Coming Back”

In 1991, Pam underwent a rarely performed surgery called DHCA to fix an aneurysm in her brain stem. Her body temperature was lowered to 50 degrees, her breathing and heartbeat stopped, and the blood drained from her head. That’s when she saw some pretty crazy stuff.

Episode 3: “The Church”

At the start of her journalism career, Paulette wrote an article about a popular but little-understood group called Scientologists. That simple freelance assignment opened a new and terrifying chapter in her life that would define her for years to come.

Episode 4: “The True Parents”

Diane wanted only to understand her place in a complex world. At the Unification Church, she found what she was looking for.

Episode 5: “The Boys Will Work It Out, Part II”

Love + Radio revisits Sarz Maxwell, who listeners may remember as the writer of Lord of the Rings slash fiction and gay romantica. But did you know she’s also a psychiatrist? In this follow-up, the team examines her unorthodox treatment for drug addiction, which has brought her the ire of the Drug Enforcement Agency.

If you’ve ever wanted to get a deeper look into cults and collectives — this is the place to start. Learn more about the new season, and subscribe to Love + Radio now on Apple Podcasts, RadioPublic or wherever you listen.
