Last month, Outside Magazine’s Outside Podcast launched the first of two special four-episode series it’s taking on as part of its company-wide mission to tell more inclusive stories about the world of adventure.

Outside Magazine wants to inspire active participation in the world outside by including all the different stories of adventuring that are out there — by making sure they are making a conscious effort to be inclusive. Outside Podcast is taking on this initiative and telling the stories of truly remarkable women and people of color across the nation.

Series 1 — Remarkable Women

The first series saw NPR correspondent and Outside contributor Stephanie May Joyce profiling remarkable women involved in conservation and adventure sports.

The first three episodes in this series featured Kris Tompkins, former CEO of Patagonia; Sarah Gerhardt, a pioneering big-wave surfer who was the first woman to ride waves at Mavericks, the infamous break on the Northern California coast; and Alexi Pappas, a world-class distance runner whose creativity and accessibility have made her a beloved figure in the track and field community.

Joyce’s series concluded with an episode profiling Kellee Edwards, the second black woman to have a show on the Travel Channel, that outlined the unbelievable steps Edwards took to get to where she is today.

These episodes strive to tell the stories of women who are thriving in the fitness community but don’t get the attention they deserve, showing the endurance of women and what can be accomplished when a woman puts her mind to it.

Series 2 — The Changing Face of the Outdoors

The first episode in the second series, released yesterday, corresponds with the May 2018 print magazine cover story, “The New Faces of Adventure: Meet the Next Generation.”

James Mills, author of the cover story, sits down with four emerging leaders of the movement to make the outdoors a more inclusive playground.

In the first episode of the series, he interviews Mikhail Martin, the co-founder of Brothers of Climbing, a community in New York City that encourages fellowship among people of color in all aspects of modern alpinism.

Other episodes will feature:

Outside is committed to telling stories that present the true breadth of perspectives and personalities in the world of adventure,” said Michael Roberts, executive editor of Outside. “As a leading magazine brand in podcasting, we are thrilled to continue with this effort in audio. These two series offer inspiring narratives about members of communities that have been historically neglected by outdoor media.”
