Podcast Garage Opens on Saturdays
You asked, we listened!
This summer, the PRX Podcast Garage is offering new weekend hours.
Starting on June 2, our business hours will be:
Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays: 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Wednesdays and Fridays: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.*
Saturdays: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
*During the summer months, we close at 5 p.m. due to the (awesome!) sounds from our neighbors at Aeronaut Allston. We hope to stay open later on all weekdays beginning in the fall.
Why the new hours?
When we opened the Podcast Garage in August 2016, we knew independent producers needed access to reliable, high-quality recording space. We built a studio that operates simply and allows us to charge an affordable rate. Since then, we’ve recorded hundreds of hours of audio and watched dozens of shows grow up. Recently our studio has been busier than ever, which made us wonder: how can we support even more people in our community?
This spring, we created a survey to answer two main questions:
- Would changing our business hours be useful to you?
- Are there improvements we can make to our recording services and studio?
In the nearly 200 responses, we saw a solid demand for more recording time in the evenings and on weekends.
So we decided to pilot new hours this summer, including Saturdays.
Ian Fox, our former Podcast Garage intern, will run the space on Saturdays. We’ll also offer new opportunities for members and others to work in the space on weekends.
From the survey, we also learned more about the needs of producers and got ideas for improvements. We’re committed to making the Podcast Garage an experimental space that supports creative risks; a welcoming space where technical expertise isn’t a barrier to entry; and a space that champions diversity and partners on community projects beyond podcasting, like oral histories and cultural organizing.
