The Peabody Awards announced finalists in the 2024 awards, “selected to represent the most compelling and empowering stories released in broadcasting and streaming media during 2023.”

Public media organization PRX congratulates several production partners among the podcast/radio nominees, including:

The Big Dig (GBH News)

There is a cynicism that hangs over the topic of American infrastructure, whether it’s high-speed rail or off-shore wind… and no one project embodies that cynicism quite like what Bostonians call “The Big Dig.” Infamous for its ever-increasing price tag, this massive highway tunneling effort was once ridiculed. But now, decades later, the story looks more complicated. So how did the narrative around this project go so horribly wrong? And what lessons can it offer for the ambitious projects of today?

The multi-part series is brought to listeners by GBH News in Boston with PRX and is hosted by Ian Coss. Producers are Ian Coss and Isabel Hibbard. The Editor is Lacy Roberts. The Executive Producer is Devin Maverick Robins. The Editorial Advisor is Stephanie Leydon with fact checking by Lisa Wardle. The Project Manager is Meiqian He. Further information is available here.

The Peabody Awards note The Big Dig podcast “takes on the humdrum subject of infrastructure and makes it riveting[.]”

“The COVID Tracking Project” from Reveal

This three-part podcast and public radio series exposes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s response to COVID-19 in the early days of the pandemic, bringing listeners inside the massive volunteer effort to collect data about tests, cases, hospitalizations and deaths in the U.S.

The Peabody Awards note: “The series addresses the crucial concerns the United States faces about why the nation had to rely on volunteerism, rather than federal and state public health institutions, to receive critical COVID data during the worst public health crisis in a century.”

The series was reported by Artis Curiskis and Kara Oehler and hosted by infectious disease expert Jessica Malaty Rivera. Full production details are available here.

“From exposing injustice to capturing the struggles and triumphs of inspirational figures across the world, these extraordinary nominees demonstrate the power and beauty of compelling storytelling,” said Jeffrey Jones, executive director of Peabody, in the official announcement. “Within an increasingly diverse and constantly evolving media ecosystem, Peabody believes these nominees deserve special recognition for crafting bold stories that continue to inspire us, but also challenge us to do better.”

Winners in this year’s awards will be announced on May 9.
