Friday, February 24 marked an unfortunate one-year anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Below are radio and podcast programs across PRX bringing listeners information, analysis, and stories to help provide insight on the global conflict:

“The World” from GBH and PRX

The global news program recently aired a special broadcast featuring reporters Carolyn Beeler and Daniel Ofman alongside producer Patti Daniels in Kyiv, with Marco Werman hosting from Washington, D.C. One year to the day after Russian president Vladimir Putin announced a “special operation” in Ukraine, “The World” reflects on the turning points in the ground war, the humanitarian crisis, and the political fallout as the conflict has become the largest in Europe since World War II:

“Reveal” from the Center for Investigative Reporting and PRX

The award-winning weekly investigative public radio program and podcast has released an episode in collaboration with the Associated Press“Listening in on Russia’s War in Ukraine” — with reporters on the front lines taking listeners inside the invasion:

More about the episode available now:

“The day President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion, Feb. 24, 2022, Russia unleashed a brutal assault on the strategic port city of Mariupol. That same day, a team of AP reporters arrived in the city. Vasilisa Stepanenko, Evgeniy Maloletka and Mstyslav Chernov kept their cameras and tape recorders rolling throughout the onslaught. Together, they captured some of the defining images of the war in Ukraine. Stepanenko and Maloletka talk [about] risking their lives to document blasted buildings, burned-out cars, enormous bomb craters and the daily life of traumatized civilians…

Next, we listen to audio that’s never been publicly shared before: phone calls Russian soldiers made during the first weeks of the invasion, secretly recorded by the Ukrainian government. AP reporter Erika Kinetz obtained more than 2,000 of these calls. Using social media and other tools, she explores the lives of two soldiers whose calls home capture intimate moments with friends and family…”

“Resistance: Stories from Ukraine” from Project Brazen and PRX

In May 2022, global journalism studio Project Brazen launched “Resistance: Stories from Ukraine” alongside PRX, a podcast featuring first person accounts from Ukrainian citizens confronting war on their doorsteps: musicians and artists, students and teachers, cyber-hackers, children’s hospital staff, and many others. The multi-part series is hosted by award-winning journalist Laurel Chor, reporting on the ground across the region.

A new episode a asks, “How has the war changed the daily lives of Ukraine’s youngest generation?” Reporter Susie Armitage highlights how the war is impacting Ukrainian children as kids share diaries offering a glimpse into their daily routines: lessons interrupted by air raid alerts, jokes about nuclear war, and volunteer work:
