Co-hosted by Hana Baba and Leila Day and launched in 2017, “The Stoop brings race, identity, journalism, and creativity together in one place. Day and Baba start conversations about what it means to be Black, dig deep into issues that aren’t always openly discussed, present stories about Blackness in America and globally, and celebrate Black joy in all its diversity.

An award-winning audio journalist whose reporting has focused on communities of color, immigrant life, culture, religion, and the arts, Baba is also host of “Crosscurrents,” the news magazine produced at KALW public radio in San Francisco. She’s Sudanese American and enjoys reporting and hosting conversations from Sudanese and African diasporas. Her work is also found via NPR, PRX, BBC, OZY, and more.

Day is an Executive Producer and Senior Editor at Pineapple Street Studios, has hosted, edited, and produced various podcasts and began her journalism career at KALW — where she reported on mental healthcare within Black communities — and has recently joined the editorial team at Transom, a workshop for new public radio. She is a co-founder of the Editors Collective, a training aimed to diversify the audio editing pool.

The Stoop’’ was awarded a Salute to Excellence from the National Association of Black Journalists in 2020. Recent episodes explore the experience of navigating living in a former sundown town, being a Black introvert, leaving the U.S., and asking personalities including LeVar Burton and Stacey Abrams about a sound that embodies Blackness.

“It’s been so refreshing to collaborate with a network that truly believes in your mission and your work,” said Day. “We can’t wait for our Stoop listeners to finally be able to support us in a way that feels unique and supports other independent producers as well.

“For journalists like us coming out of public radio, Radiotopia feels like a natural home for ‘The Stoop,’” said Baba. “There’s a common ethos and values we share as public media journalists — so this felt like the perfect fit.”

“We’ve been fans of ‘The Stoop’ since its launch, and were lucky to collaborate with the team on a mini-series in 2018,” said Julie Shapiro, Executive Producer of Radiotopia. “Leila and Hana have a magical chemistry and craft each episode with such care. We’re over the moon about ‘The Stoop’ joining Radiotopia now, and are thrilled to help bring this important show to new audiences.”

“The Stoop” is currently in the midst of its fifth season, which will conclude in June. The podcast is independently produced and new episodes will be released beginning in the fall.

Radiotopia from the public media organization PRX is a curated network of independent, listener-supported, artist-owned podcasts. In 2017, Radiotopia was named one of Fast Company’s top 10 most innovative companies. Podcasts in the network have received recognition from the Peabody Awards, Alfred L. duPont-Columbia Awards, the Pulitzer Prizes, and from the Third Coast International Audio Festival.
