The last year of master in Politecnico is usually a rush for every student, twelve intense months, full of news and changes. Students start an internship and often meet for the first time the real work world. Simultaneously, they also (desperately) search for a thesis topic, something that passionate them and that will put them at work on a project for several months.

Here, in this changeable environment, our journey began just a few months ago. We — Serena and Francesco — accepted the challenge of carrying on a fresh, interesting and challenging project for our master thesis.

BUT, before jumping into a usual topic introduction, we would like to introduce a little bit more who we are, where we are and why we are here, now, writing our first article. We both come from Italy and we are attending our last year of PSSD (product service system design) master course at Politecnico di Milano. Serena is currently based in Shanghai where she is attending the Double Degree at Tongji University and an internship as service designer. Francesco is now back in Milano after a semester abroad in Toronto where he had the chance to get involved in the creation of workshops for the city and the students.

Despite the physical distance, three important ingredients brought us together in fighting against different time zones and the diverse daily schedule: passion, motivation and the desire to trigger “tangible” changes trough service design.

This last point opens the discussion to the presentation of what, effectively, this project will talk about: public sector innovation. This is such a complex and broad field that giving a unique and effective definition is already a challenge on its own. Simplifying OECD’s words, we can state that PSI regards the improvement of public services and the way they are delivered to citizens. The aim is to enhance them, increasing their accessibility and overall quality.

Still confused? We know: this topic is huge!

That’s why we decided to focus our strength and join forces to start this publication alongside our thesis development. From two different points of view, we are going to talk about stories, cases and interesting experts met along our project path, to share findings and make this ‘hard’ topic something closer to all of you. We are glad to introduce you to this journal and to start together this new adventure: Let the journey begin!
