Edx has been at it’s very best in recent months- one of the few businesses that flourished on account of the lockdown. And if you ask me, they have been doing a pretty good job with it so far. There are hundreds of courses available on the platform, by the most prestigious universities on the planet like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Harvard University, Toronto University, and so on. Here are 3 psychology programs on Edx, which is sure to elevate you to the next step in your academic career. The programs mentioned are not assigned any ranks- the order is merely what suited me.

1.UQx’s Introduction to Developmental, Social & Clinical Psychology XSeries

This psychology XSeries is an introduction to developmental, social, and clinical psychology so you can better understand the human mind and how it drives behavior.

This XSeries consists of four courses.

· Introduction to clinical psychology

· Introduction to social psychology

· Introduction to developmental psychology

· Research methods in psychology

Each course in the XSeries includes between 7 and 8 sections.

Some of the topics being discussed in the program are:

  • Psychological disorders and how they are treated
  • Why we act the way we do in certain settings and situations
  • How our bodies and minds develop from birth until later in life
  • Methods behind psychological research and how to interpret and report research

The course is provided by the University of Queensland, Australia and it follows the same syllabus as its graduate program on introductory psychology. The instructors of the program are all professors and assistant professors from the University of Queensland like Blake Mckimmie, Roy Baumeister, and Virginia Slaughter.

The program follows a very active syllabus stuffed with activities and assignments, which will help you to understand the topic in detail. The narrations and overall course design are top-notch. The program is surely worth your time.

2. AP® Psychology — Course

This is a six-course program- AP® Psychology sequence designed to prepare you for the AP® Psychology exam. The program provided by the University of British Columbia is in simple words, psychology in a nutshell. It covers almost all the major topics in the field of psychology. The program is based on the AP® Psychology course it provides in the university campus. The program contains a total of 6 courses.

AP® Psychology — Course 1: What is Psychology:

An introduction to psychology, its definition, history, and research methods used.

AP® Psychology — Course 2: How the Brain Works:

An introduction to neuroscience, basic physiology, and sensation and perception.

AP® Psychology — Course 3: How the Mind Works:

The basics of learning, its theories, concept of memory and consciousness

AP® Psychology — Course 4: How Behavior Works:

Covers topics like personality, intelligence, developmental psychology, and social psychology.

AP® Psychology — Course 5: Health and Behavior:

Abnormal psychology and clinical practices are discussed in the course.

AP® Psychology — Course 6: Exam Preparation & Review:

A revision of the above courses.

The program includes video-based lectures and demonstrations, detailed articles, interviews with real research psychologists and a plethora of practice questions to help prepare you for competitive exams in the field of psychology.

The animation works of the courses and the narration by Steven. J. Barnes (assistant professor of psychology, University of British Columbia) adds to the attraction. If you are preparing for any psychology-related competitive exams, this can serve as the only revision you would ever need.

3. Fundamentals of Neuroscience

Based on the introductory neurobiology courses taught at Harvard College, Fundamentals of Neuroscience is a three-part series that explores the structure and function of the entire nervous system — from the microscopic inner workings of a single nerve cell to the staggering complexity of the brain.

You’ll study the electrical properties of individual neurons, examine how neurons pass signals to one another, and how complex dynamics result from just a few neurons. You’ll explore sensation, perception, and the physiology of functional regions of the brain.

Through fun animations, documentaries, and interactive virtual labs discover what makes the brain tick and how we perceive the world around us.

  • Fundamentals of bioelectricity
  • How you can do neuroscience in your home
  • How neurons communicate with each other
  • How sensory perception works in the brain
  • The basic anatomy of functional areas of the brain

The video lectures are hosted by David Cox (Assistant Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and Computer Science, Harvard University). The dynamic interactive approach of the program makes this e-learning experience one of a kind. However, to grasp the concepts clearly, you may require some basic knowledge in electrochemistry and mathematics.
