Younger people are becoming aware that the world is filled with enormous difficulties, many of which they aspire to solve.

“If you listen to your elders, you will better understand what you should be doing.”

Every once in a while, life gives us a reprieve, but more often than not, we’re hit with a series of setbacks, such as the end of a relationship or a job, the loss of a loved one, a traumatic event, or the realization that we’ve failed at something.

“People who believe that the mountains do not undergo any changes are mistaken. They are born from earthquakes and are eroded by wind and rain, and even if we don’t perceive them, they change little every day.” — Paulo Coelho

Every one of us has to deal with adversity. It’s not just our bad luck; it was planned that way. Trees that can withstand the fiercest winds are stronger than those that sprout in the richest soil.

“Get used to the fact that life isn’t going to be fair. Do not let reality cause you to have negative thoughts; rather, accept it.

The world won’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something before you feel good about yourself.

Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault; so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.”

Those are a few highlights from Bill Gates’s speech at Mount Whitney High School. When we hit a roadblock, what will happen? Do we give in to our manipulative tendencies and anger, or do we keep our calm and respond lovingly?

Every day, we moan about how unfair life is. That’s because fair is merely a word that you find in a dictionary, but not in real life. Screaming for fairness or equality will not change anything.
